Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that the Dakota Dachshund Rescue puppymill dog, Rhett, was found in Sioux Falls a week ago.  Thanks for allowing me to post the Lost flyer even though many of you aren't from the SD area.  Everyone is so relieved Rhett was found and is now safe at his foster's home.

Speaking of foster dogs: I currently foster Luke Skywalker for DDR and just found out someone has applied to adopt him!  I have had the honor of fostering Luke in my home for the past 6 months and am happy to say that the scared, skinny puppymill boy has blossomed into a happy, playful, loving dog!  I am very sad that he will be leaving me soon, but I'm excited for him to continue on his journey here on Earth in his forever home!  Plus, with Luke moving on, it will open up another foster home spot for another dog in need.

I blog on the website for Luke, so feel free to check him and other dachshunds in need of homes on the DDR website: www.dakotadachshundrescue.org

Thanks everyone!

~Emily

So, we now have 4 dogs at our house! Jelly Bean and Monty are our's (Nolan's and mine); Luke is still with us, the foster dog from Dakota Dachshund Rescue; and we are "temporarily" fostering Scooby, a 10 month old miniature dachshund. He is so much fun! I really want to keep him, or at least continue to foster him until he goes to his forever home. He is so loving, energetic, playful, and sociable! I know Nolan loves him to death, too, but not sure how he feels about keeping him around for a while. I bet if I offered to feed them every day (in the mornings and most of the nights, unless I'm not home and he is home), he'd be cool with it! :)

Also, for those of you in the SIOUX FALLS, SD AREA:

A FOSTER DOG FROM DAKOTA DACHSHUND RESCUE WAS LOST LAST NIGHT AROUND 8:30 PM! Below is the flier with his picture and other information. His name is RHETT and he is a LONG-HAIRED BLACK AND TAN DACHSHUND.  I guess he came from a puppy mill and is still a bit scared of strangers. However, there is a phone number to call if you see him or are even able to get ahold of him. PLEASE HELP!!!

Lost Dachshund

Please help find Rhett!
Rhett escaped from the fenced-in yard of his short term foster home. He was last seen in an open field south of S. Stockwell Circle which is in a new housing subdivision s
outh of 57th, between Cliff Ave

and Southeastern in Sioux Falls, SD.

Rhett was a breeder dog from a Nebraska puppymill that is now in foster care

with Dakota Dachshund Rescue so may be very scared, but is a sweetheart. He is wearing a new yellow and blue collar. Please call Diane if you find Rhett or spot him: 605-310-8443.

I'm pretty new in the world of small and toy dogs. My first love has always been the German shepherd, but my mom said I had to get a small one this past March when I outright told her I was getting a dog. So I searched for the one small breed I felt fit me best - the Papillon. As a senior in college who is working on getting into Vet School, I didn't have time for a puppy. So I searched around for a young adult in need and quickly found Lilly who soon became Laika (pronounced Lie-ka). I never thought a little dog could do so much for me. She's my everything.

Hey everyone,

My mom bought me a pomeranian puppy a few years ago when I was living at home while going to college. I'm now off living on my own, but sadly she dognapped Romeo from me! He and my parent's dog Oreo are inseparable, so we decided it was best for both of them to keep them together. I can't help but brag about him still, so here he is!

On another note, I am now starting to think about getting my own dog. Based on what I'm looking for in a dog, I go back and forth between a Pom, a Papillon, and  Miniature Dachshund. It's such a tough decision!

I have two miniature Dachshunds, Jelly Bean and Monty:

When we first got them a year and a half ago, we bought nylon collars for them to wear as well as nylon harnesses. We were dumb at first and kept both the collars and harnesses on them all day. They started to lose hair where the nylon was rubbing under their arms and on their bellies, so we only used the harnesses when out for walks. Well, Jelly Bean kept losing lots of hair on his neck from where the nylon collar was rubbing. After some checking around, we bought the boys rolled leather collars shown on them in the picture above. These, we were told, would minimize the rubbing and allow their hair to grow back. Monty never had much of a problem with losing hair from the collars, but now they both have hair loss under their necks. I'm not sure exactly why, but maybe it is due to the buckle part of the rolled leather collar?

What do you use on your Dachshunds or other breeds? Should we continue with the rolled leather collars? We rarely use their harnesses anymore for walks because then they tend to pull our arms off. Surprising how strong a 13 pound dog can be... We use nylon chain martingale collars our friend/trainer recommended to us and they work wonders for the boys. Now they're good walkers - heeling right next to us! Monty still pulls, but Jelly Bean is a true follower and Master of the Walk (Cesar Milan anyone?).

Anyway, suggestions, comments or the like would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I am the proud owner of two miniature dachshunds.

Jelly Bean is 20 months old and is a black and tan dapple. He's also a mama's boy!

Monty (Montgomery) is a few days shy of 18 months old and is a dark red brindle!

He's climbing out from underneath the couch!

We are having some issues with Monty especially around other dogs at the dog park. He lunges at them and nips at them. He seems to actually be afraid of them at first, but if they come too close or are full of energy, he attacks. He hasn't seriously hurt anyone, but I'm worried that it could escalate to that. His brother, Jelly Bean is usually fine with other dogs until Monty puts up a fuss. Then, Jelly Bean goes to Monty's rescue/aid. Monty also doesn't seem to understand that when another dog chases JB, they're just playing. Instead of joining in the play, Monty chases the other dog away and tries to bite! My boyfriend and I are at a total loss as to what to do with him. We know his confidence is low and have been trying to work on boosting it up by being calm and assertive around him and taking him on walks without Jelly Bean so that he looks to us for his insecurities. We've watched a lot of the Dog Whisperer and think that his techniques are good and we've been trying to utilize them when working with the dogs. We've also done some clicker training and both dogs graduated from beginner obedience. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of anyone in the southeastern SD vicinity that could help us out with Monty's behavior?

I also was wondering if anyone else in this lovely toy dog group was into or knows a bit about Earthdog? I'd love to get started in an Earthdog club and feel that Monty has an excellent nose for it! Unfortunately, he rubs his poor nose raw in the backyard smelling everything like a dog on speed! Jelly Bean would be good at it too, especially since he is so eager to please. Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks again for reading my intro post and my questions. I hope to hear from you soon and can't wait to hear all about your little pups!

~Emily, Jelly Bean, and Monty :)
